vylthana grew up in the coastal town of torrine, famous for its extensive criminal underground and all but sanctioned piracy. her mother, kosha vedz, a notorious pirate wanted by the ostrean governement, was not prepared to raise a child, which left vylthana to use her talents of music and deceptions to perform and run cons on seedy street corners. vylthana eventually made her way to the continent of grepeqos, intending to get away from the shadow of her mother and make a better living. it was here she met up with the bard troupe moonvale. she picked up the tricks moonvale members had learned through knowledge of local lore and legends, and combined them with her early mastery of deception, to become an incredibly successful bard. after a series of unfortunate events, vylthana was forced to separate from her troupe and headed for ostreau, where she continued her traditional routine under the alias of "the lark of torrine."

winona and her sister jessamine are the twin daughters of an elven and human ex-nobles who were ostracized because of their marriage. winona resented her parents from an early age and stuck close to her sister. jessamine soon found her talents for performing, and winona found her talents for trickery, and they quickly began to run cons together in order to compensate for their parents' lack of income. winona has always been determined to make a better life for her and her sister than her parents were willing to provide, and she refuses to give up like she feels they did.

elona grew up in denerim's alienage, losing her mother at a very young age. she grew incredibly close to her cousin shianni, and they considered themselves sisters. elona never wanted to marry and resented the tradition of arranged marriage in the alienage. after the horrific events of her wedding, she appreciated the grey wardens for saving her from horrific treatment in a denerim prison, but resented them for taking her away from shianni. though she did not want to marry nelaros, she thinks highly of him for sacrificing himself for her family, and still wears what would have been her wedding band on a chain around her neck.

rhiannon grew up in lothering, and was attached to her father's hip the minute she was born. rhiannon took his loss hard, and took it upon herself to look after the twins: bethany and carver. it was especially hard to hide her and bethany's magical abilities in fear of being taken to the circle. rhiannon took the loss of bethany during the darkspawn attack hard, and it created quite a bit of increased tension between her and her brother carver. in order to buy passage into kirkwall, rhiannon and carver agreed to join meeran's mercenary company for a year, and it was soon after that that rhiannon joined on with varric for his expedition to the deep roads.

valena grew up in a large family with two sisters and 4 brothers. she was the only one of the family to show propensity for magic and was whisked away to the circle at the age of 12, and essentially ostracized from the trevelyan family. in the circle, she proved to be a quick learner and tried to pass this knowledge onto those that were not as proficient. she was a strong opponent of tranquility, and saw many friends fail the harrowing and be doomed to this fate. her hatred of this practice made her a troublemaker in the eyes of the templar order, and she suffered many abuses at the hands of her "caretakers", instilling in her a deep distrust and disgust of templars. when the circle fell due to the events in kirkwall, valena fled and eventually joined the mage delegation at the divine conclave, where a disatrous series of events led to the presence of a strange mark on her hand.

olivia shepard was born in a colony on mindoir, growing up in a farming family. at the age of 16, batarian slavers raided mindoir, killing her family and friends. shepard was picked up by an alliance military patrol, and enlisted a few years later. in 2177, shepard was part of an alliance unit sent to investigate radio silence on akuze. when the unit camped, they were set upon by thresher maws, and shepard's entire unit was killed, leaving only shepard alive. shepard was promoted to several different leadership positions after this, eventually being placed on the normandy in 2183 as executive officer.

aden ryder grew up on the citadel, resentful of his father and determined to prove he could succeed where his father failed. aden was extremely protective of his sister aurora, and often shielded her from the judgement of their father. aden joined on to the alliance military's technology and engineering program where he attended school for computer science and was also an on-planet technician for his unit's technological devices. aden took a special interest in artificial intelligence because of his father's work and joined up with the andromeda initiative partially for his sister and partially because of their promising advancements in ai.
